VA Extends Its Neglect of Veterans from Living to Deceased

The Veterans Administration is again proving to be a woefully incompetent agency that just can’t seem to realize that their entire purpose for existence is to take care of the people who put their lives on the line to fight this nation’s wars. It has just one job: take care of veterans.

It appears that the VA’s neglect of its benefactors now extends beyond the realm of the living.

The latest scandal to break paints another bleak picture. A whistle-blower at an Illinois VA hospital has leaked news that bodies of dead veterans have been left unclaimed in the morgue for up to two months.

To play devil’s advocate, there are some potential reason this is happening; some that the article references and some that aren’t included. For example, one of the problems seems to be that families aren’t claiming at least of the deceased bodies. There could be one of three reasons for this: 1) that the family was contacted and has intentionally refused to claim the veterans body due to the inability to afford a proper burial, 2) that the VA simply isn’t contacting or hasn’t been able to contact the families, or 3) the VA hasn’t been able to ID the veteran (though, then one would have to wonder how they knew he/she was a vet).

However, because of the other circumstances identified about the Chicago facility, I’m more prone to believe that the VA simply doesn’t care or have a sense of urgency as long as it continues to be funded. What in the world is the director even thinking? This is incompetence of the highest order.

“Hines VA — the hospital that has been overrun with cockroaches and mold and left vets waiting for care for months on secret wait lists, has reached a new low in the treatment of our veterans,” Kirk said in an interview with Fox. “We now have reports of bodies being left to decompose in the morgue for months on end.”

It’s just sick and despicable for the VA to so cavalierly disregard the dignity and respect that should be afforded to these veterans. Sir William Gladstone said, “Show me the manner in which a nation cares for its dead and I will measure with mathematical exactness the tender mercies of its people, their respect for the laws of the land and their loyalty to high ideals.

How is this caring for the dead?

The level of decay was so pronounced that at least one of the bodies had liquefied. When the staff tried to remove it, the body-bag burst.

Can you imagine?! Can anyone expect anything less from Chicago though? Yes, I’m labeling an entire political system in a single city – local, state and federal. What will it take to fix the VA?

I think part of the problem stems from how employees view veterans. Not long ago, I was wearing a neon orange shirt at the VA that says, “#GunFreeZones Are #CrimeSpreeZones” and a VA employee told me that we don’t need guns because we have knives. I told her that a knife won’t deflect a bullet and I don’t want someone that may outweigh and out-strength me getting that close to me. Anyway, I wasn’t in the mood to argue (because I was at the VA, which is frustrating) and ended the discussion so I could get out of there.

Another doctor that overheard the conversation approached and confided in me that there are a lot of liberals that work at the VA because they don’t think veterans deserve the benefits they get. Their entire purpose is to deny veterans service or care whenever possible. He personally knew at least three. This is actually the second time I’d heard this, the last time when I was stationed in the D.C. area.

The VA needs to do a census and purge before change will happen. Obama, since day one, has talked a big talk about supporting troops and veterans, but that’s all its been. The VA has gotten worse, the military has been destroyed, the country has never been more volatile.
